A couple of startling surprises have taken place in the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami. The newly risen star of the tennis world, Novak Djokovic who won the Australian Open followed by his victory at Indian Wells, got knocked out by South African qualifier Kevin Anderson in the 2nd round. Anderson is ranked world number 122. He only turned professional last year. Djokovic was the winner of the men's singles' title last year.
Roger Federer won the title in 2005 and 2006. In the current tournament he pretty well cruised to the quarterfinals, when he was beaten by Andy Roddick. The American was elated, and thanked the law of probability. He said Federer hadn't missed a ball against him for about six years.
Roddick's elation was shortlived and his hopes to go all the way to the finish line were resoundingly dashed by Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the semi-finals in a two-set win. Roddick was the 2004 champion.
So all the champions of the last four years have fallen.
Davydenko will be facing Spain's Rafael Nadal in the final. Nadal looks pretty indomitable, and Davydenko knows it. Night or day, he fights so hard, he says of Nadal. No matter what, he's making history as the first Russian player ever to reach the final in this Miami tournament.
